  1. Hi Megan,

I thought your PowerPoint on Direct Instruction was very informative. It covered all the factual information about this teaching strategy. Because this strategy is teacher-directed, it is a very popular method. While I prefer a more inclusive teaching strategy, myself, this method certainly has its merits. As an approach that emphasizes procedural knowledge, it is extremely useful for subjects such as Math. This is likely one of the reasons I am less inclined to use it, to be honest.

However, I have actually seen this method used in class, and been very grateful for its use. Currently, one of the classes that I have subbed for has a teacher on early Maternity leave, so substitutes are covering her class in week-long shifts. Fortunately, she uploads all her lessons to Google Classroom, along with detailed videos on how to complete each new Math project. Her videos show the students the math problems they will be doing for the day, how to break them down, and solve them. This is a huge relief to many of the substitutes, who try to avoid Math classes, at all costs. This is also the perfect example, I believe of incorporating technology with this teaching strategy.

Therefore, when you posted this presentation, I laughed just a bit. I did not expect to see any connections to what I have done in the classroom, as I have never used this method, myself. Apparently, I was wrong. So thank you, this was very informative.

    Elizabeth
